Dandenong Ranges Open Studios weekend is more than an opportunity to meet the maker, you can also learn, make and explore your own creative side. There is a wide array of artists, from ceramicists to photo realist painters, from sculptures to poets, and many of them are offering a special treat as part of the workshops and events program.
Check here for a full list of the free workshops*, demonstrations and performances on offer, suitable for people of all ages and experiences. Some workshops are limited to ensure you get the best experience with the artists, so make sure you book your place. (*Some workshops may have a fee to cover materials.)
Sculpture Workshop with Ross Miller
People of all ages can enjoy and succeed in this work shop. Create a sculptural masterpiece with the skilful Ross Miller guiding the way. Using clay, sand, found objects (like leaves, stones or toys) and casting plaster – just like they do in CSI investigations – Ross will demonstrate as you work through the stages of making your very own relief sculpture to hang at home. As a bonus, watch Puffing Billy go by at 12.45pm!

Kapi Art Space- A celebration of creativity!
Kapi Art Space is a place to explore, create, learn, connect, perform, dream and come alive. Open Studio Weekend gives everyone a taste of a wide variety of arts. This weekend will be full of surprises and the gallery will be humming with beauty. The gallery space will be filled with Heather's photorealistic art, with prints, cards and extra surprises to take home. She will also have loads of student work on display. Students will be painting in the studio all weekend, and there will be activities for the children too. Chill in the beautiful garden and enjoythe theatre antics of Mardee and her theatre collaboration and the visiting Jazz ensemble. The possibilities are endless when you allow creativity to lead the way!
Workshop 1 - Heather will be facilitating a photo-realistic painting workshop teaching simple techniques to produce a piece of photorealistic art. Maximum: 12 people.

Workshop 2 - Observe an actors’ workshop as they collaborate to create a show to be held on Mothers Day weekend (May 10-12) called "Mothers of the Mountain”. Mardee will direct a cast of Melbourne’s best writers & actors who will present a variety of perspectives on motherhood. This free event is a theatrical celebration and compassionate exploration of how we understand what it is to mother a person, a group, a nation. Discuss the process with the director and cast. Maximum: 20-30 people.

Summer Soiree Jazz Performance – Kapi is delighted to introduce the magical voice of Lea Mason and her ‘free’ jazz ensemble Extemporaneous Lea. This trio of seasoned improvising musicians have played jazz with many diverse artists both in Australia and internationally for over 30 years. *$20 Wine and food boxes for sale

Two Floors Studio Collective
With potter Lee Goller; multimedia textile designers Lucy Beach and Claire Iacuone-Hadley; and wood turner Anne Maria
Workshop 1 - Multi media textile design with Lucy and Claire
Including abstract silk screen printing (breakdown textiles), eco dying, block printing on fabric, stencilling and screen printing. Learn the stages of eco-dying including how to wrap, boil, stew and unbundle fabric. Fabrics include silk, wool, cotton, stretch cotton blends, and white clothing blanks. Learn about sustainable fashion and up cycling to give stained and tired clothing new life.

Workshop 2 – Ceramic hand building with Lee Goller Sessions a) coil plant pot, Session b) slab building vessels
(1) Saturday and Sunday mornings 10 am to 12.30 pm - making and decorating a coil plant pot for the garden in terra cotta clay and coloured clay slips.
(2) Saturday and Sunday afternoons 1 pm to 3.30 pm. Slab-building vessels (e.g. vases, jugs, decorative tiles), using white clay and coloured slips. Exploring texture, colour and design of a functional object.
Cost of $25 includes materials and firing.
Anne Maria will also be demonstrating wood turning on her lathe.
