Updated 23 MArch 2020 - his race is postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Great Train race is a must do for all keen runners, that has been happening for over 34 years.

An annual runners pilgrimage to the Dandenong Ranges, a challenge of muscle against machine, where the aim is to beat Puffing Billy from Belgrave to Emerald Lake station over the 13.5km course.  For some it's a race but for others it's a chance to participate in one of the most unique fun runs on the calendar.

The major spectacle for this race is watching thousands of runners race underneath the historic trestle bridge with Puffing Billy crossing overtop. With several level crossings to reach, runners scramble to beat the train to each one - otherwise they have to wait and fall behind the train's pace.

The event starts near Puffing Billy Railway Station in Belgrave and finishes at Emerald Lake Park. Competitors get to traverse the Dandenong Ranges along the route of this historic train as it puffs and toots its way through the fern gullies.

The Great Train Race is organised by the dedicated Puffing Billy Railway volunteers and all proceeds and additonal donations go towards the preservation of this Melbourne and Dandenong Ranges icon.
